Memoirist and experienced writing workshop presenter, Graeme Gibson pitches his workshops to accommodate writers from beginner to advanced. You’ll have a hands-on opportunity to learn how to shape the facts—not make them up—enabling you to tell the stories of your life. The workshop also offers an opportunity to participate in the life of WestWords by having your stories recorded and played in the WPCC and displayed in the Community Arts Centre. WORKSHOP: Poetry with Mike Ladd
Mike Ladd is a poet who has published eight collections, is a poetry mentor, judge, a reviewer for the Sydney Morning Herald and the Australian Book Review. Mike was the editor of the ABC's highly respected program Poetica for 18 years. Mike's Poetry Workshop will suit those who have begun writing poetry and now want to take the next step. In the second half of the class, participants can, if they wish bring copies of a recent poem to share with Mike and the group for feedback and editing suggestions. WORKSHOP: Writing for Children, Getting it right the first time with David Reiter.
So you Think you can Write for Children? Dr David Reiter is an award-winning text and digital artist, and Publisher / CEO at IP (Brisbane). David's picture book Bringing Down the Wall (2013), was Best Book for Teens & Kids (Canadian Children’s Book Centre). So You Think You Can Write for Children? This workshop will address the questions like: • what are the main age groups for children that your work could be targeting? • are there subjects too hot to handle if you want to achieve good sales? • is there a market for fiction that educates as well as entertains, and can the two aims work together? • how to achieve a Winnie-the-Pooh effect by creating stories that speak to us on different levels and that even parents can return to enjoy • minimalist style: how to keep your style accessible but still engaging.
